Montgomery College Cultural Arts Center - Dance Studio
This photograph is simple yet elegant. I have an extra affinity for this photo, having taken hours upon hours of dance lessons growing up.
If you’ve ever taken dance, then you know, dance studios are not always the most elegant. Especially if they’ve just had a class right before you, they usually smell like sweat and feet. They are generally big and bland with a mirror covering an entire wall so that you can focus only on yourself and the other dancers in the room.
I have to commend the architects (SmithGroup) and the builders (LendLease) for this studio, however. The ceiling to floor window that overlooks the city is inspiring. I can imagine being in that room, choreographing a piece, and whenever I get stuck, I can look out the window for some inspiration and motivation.
Also, the light fixtures are unique! They give off a romantic ambiance that is a complete contrast with the florescent lights used in most dance studios. I love that romantic feeling. I know, especially in ballet, that would help the dancers get lost in their movement.
I love this image because it shows how big this space is by placing the model right in the middle of the room. Having the room all to yourself to get lost in the moment was my favorite thing to do as a dancer, and I think Jeff Sauers captured that feeling beautifully.
